Beautiful land in one of the most historical parts of Texas is now being offered for building your dream home. Located in an area steeped in Texas history, these 514+/- acres offer rolling terrain, woods, thickets, ponds, mature trees, numerous water sources, panoramic vistas and a way of life that surpasses none.

A preliminary assessment by the Texas Historical Commission dates the historic home on this property from the 1870’s. Hardwood imported from Louisiana was used to build the home’s exterior. Carved gingerbread woodwork enhances the exterior and the widow’s walk on the roof. The interior features twelve-foot ceilings, large windows surrounding the house, four fireplaces, wood walls and a spacious entry hall. Antique iron fencing and large trees surround the home.

Stephen F. Austin, also know as the Father of Texas, selected 300 courageous souls to accompany him to a land that had been home to the Karankawas, Comanches, Tonkawas, French explorers and Spanish conquistadores for hundreds of years. Austin recognized the versatility of Texas land and the bounty it had to offer and through much trial and tribulation set about colonizing Texas.

The beginning was very difficult with the first grant from New Spain seemingly dissipating into the wind with revolutionary unrest in Mexico. Austin hurried to Mexico City in an attempt to secure the colony’s future with the new provisional government and in his absence the colony suffered. Rumors about losing the grant, crop failures, seed shortages, lack of money and supplies, Indian attacks and Austin’s long absence hurt the development of the colony. Austin persevered and eventually negotiated a better deal for the colonists.

In 1832, a small group of men met at San Felipe and began taking the steps that would eventually lead to Texas declaring itself an independent state. When Austin traveled to Mexico City to present this constitution to the Mexican President, he did not know that his freedom was in jeopardy. There was political unrest in Mexico as Santa Anna began his attempt to overthrown the Mexican government and establish a dictatorship. Austin was arrested on his way back to Texas and spent two years in prison before being released by general amnesty in 1835.

Santa Anna promised support for the colonists but planned on occupying it with military force. When he started to disarm all Texas citizens, the fighting began. On March 2, 1836 at a small place now called Washington-On-The Brazos, a group of heroic men declared Texas independent of Mexico. A dream was born, the Republic of Texas was established, and each Texan today owes a debt of gratitude to these brave souls that pioneered Texas.

This historic property is rich in Texas history and is premier for development.

Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession. Above all, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word.” John Steinbeck
