Built by Mrs. Mary Hale Toland, widow of a local physician, it served as the local hotel until she passed away in 1931. It became a private residence and reopened again as a hotel in 1978 until the mid 1980’s.  

Chappell Hill was begun in 1847 by Jacob and Mary Haller and named for pioneer settler Robert Wooding Chappell. It soon became the educational and cultural center of Stephen F. Austin’s second colony. The Men’s and Women’s College began in the early 1850’s and became part of the Methodist Church in 1854. In 1856 it divided into Soule University for the men and Chappell Hill Female College for the women.
